While in Singapore, I had the privilege of studying Neuro Linguistic Programming and the Enneagram Personality Profiling System under James Leong, an NLP Master Trainer and the first and only (as of this date) NLP practitioner to make a statistical study on the positive impact of NLP practices.

During our discussion on the Enneagram Profiling System, I asked James why he chose the Enneagram over other profiling systems such as DISC and MBTI. He explained that although other profiling systems are accurate and help a lot in determining behaviors, they lack one crucial item, which is providing a framework on how to “move on” to another type.

I thought about that for a while until the light bulb went off in my head.

I remember back in the day when DISC was introduced to the company I was working in. I was a very high “S”, which means I prefer a safe and stable environment, and am generally supportive rather than forceful. Now at the time my boss wanted to coach me to improve myself, and would use words from the DISC concept. He would tell me things like, “You have to be more like a D”, or “I’m trying to develop the C in you”.  Now I understood what he wanted to achieve, and he would do this by putting me in situations/projects that would “increase” my D or C characteristic.

Thing was, it was almost always a struggle for me whenever I was put in those situations.  Don’t get me wrong, there was always a lot of support and positive coaching to help me, but it would still be hard for me, and I couldn’t understand what was “wrong” with me. Until I encountered the Enneagram anyway.

The beauty of the Enneagram is that in addition to profiling (which includes your likely behaviors, tendencies, preferences, etc) it provided a framework on WHY you were that way, and HOW you can move to a different profile.  So for example, I’m a type 9 Enneagram, meaning Peacemaker, and through the Enneagram, I am now in a better place to understand why I behave like a 9, and what I need to do in order to grow or develop myself.  And I can use NLP techniques to achieve that growth. Perfect combination!

So right now I’m excited to use the Enneagram and NLP together to strengthen my coaching skills, not only on an individual basis, but also for teams and organizations.

Oh, did I forget to mention?  The Enneagram types can also be applied to teams and organizations as well!
